Midnight, after the room empties. Elijah Ben Jamin plays “Midnight Psalms” — ten songs for the hours when the service is over, the chairs are stacked and somebody is still at the piano. Brass glints, brushed drums, and the blues sitting where the shout used to be. He is the only act on the roster who sounds like he is playing to nobody in particular, which is why the rest of the label goes to hear him.
